Years before I crafted my first item and unaware of my relation
to Native America,
I was drawn to the culture and had read every book I could find
on the “People”.
By chance, while attending a Little League baseball game, I found
an arrowhead.
This, of course, kindled my interest to a fever pitch. I saw an
ad for a Powwow
close by and couldn't wait to attend.
I was overwhelmed by the music, the dancers and the traditions
I saw come to life
in front of my eyes. At the same time, I was very disappointed to
see so much
“mail-order” and “Made in China” items filling
the vendor's booths around the circle.
I vowed that day to learn the ancestral crafts and to ultimately
become a vendor of traditional crafts, which I have been doing for
many years now.
I have successfully encouraged Powwow organizers to have crafts
competitions among vendors, voted on those attending, for the sole
purpose of getting back to the traditional ways of the “People”.
My goal is to provide you with items that you will want to pass
on to your descendants
that actually honor the old ways. As you will see from photos of
my beadwork items,
I am spiritually drawn to the styles of work done by the Plains
Indians. My Silversmithing
is inspired by the early Navajo silversmiths with simple designs
and decorations.
Curiously, there is little, if any, direction in my work that eminates
from my bloodlines
of Choctaw and Cherokee! When I sit down at my workbench, the thing
I do is light my smudge bowl. After smudging and sending prayers
up with my pipe, I feel I have opened
my mind up to what the CREATOR leads me to make.
Thanks for taking the time to read and understand why I do what
I do!
I welcome the opportunity to do custom work, repair items that
have been damaged
or need restoration, or I will design a special piece for you.
Wopila! Wado!
Steve
